Jesus crafted his last meal with the disciples into a core metaphor for faith. (Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-23, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26) Whether we call it the Eucharist, Communion, the Last or Lord's Supper, or a host of other names, this mysterious, transcendent moment has become a central part of faith for Christians worldwide.
Each of these names for the same event has unique meaning. The Lord's Supper connotes the body and blood of Jesus, broken and poured out for the forgiveness of sins. We are to take and eat to remember the Passover meal Jesus ate with his disciples. The Eucharist reminds us it is a meal of thanksgiving: an opportunity to thank God for Christ's work in us. Communion encourages us to commune with both God and other believers.
