The cap and gown represent much more than the end of matriculation. They symbolize the big moments in life in which we pass from one stage to another. These moments of change are moments when we may hear God?s voice.
Some possible options to expand on this idea: High school graduation marks both an end, and a beginning--the beginning of an incredible journey into a great, unknown world. As Christians, graudates are not on this journey alone, but are accompanied by a "cloud of witnesses." (Hebrews 12:1-2) As graduates enter into adulthood, they are forced to make a decision, to either serve mannon and the gods of this world or serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15) Graduation is a rite of passage to adulthood. The challenge for believers is to make their passage not just physical and emotional, but spiritual: to act as a spiritual grownup. As Paul states in the famous chapter on love, we work our entire lives to graduate to Christian perfection. (1 Corinthians 13:9-12)
