The annual holiday with the biggest cultural "buzz" these days is Halloween. This event can be interpreted in many ways, from the ancient night before All Saints Day to the contemporary secular culture's obsession with death to the exploration of powers and principalities in our material world. Parents know the event in innocuous ways through the eyes of children whose focus is on playing dress up and receiving candy.
Use this annual rite to explore the Christian alternative of playing "dress up". Examples include withstanding attacks from this world's principalities and powers, which requires that we put on the whole armor of God, from the belt of truth to the helmet of salvation (Eph 6:10:18). Alternately, costumes are an opportunity to address our identity in Christ, showing the world that we're easy to spot by our love. (John 13:34-35). Third, taking a cure from the apostle Paul, encourage your congregation to clothe themselves in virtue (Col 3:12-14).
